The Children of the Commune
In 1972 the artist Otto Muehl founded the Friedrichshof,
a commune for like-minded artists and friends, outside of
Vienna. Here he hoped to raise children that were
“unspoiled from the nuclear family”, a new human breed.
Setting out as a free collective, the social experiment soon
turned into a totalitarian system with Otto Muehl at its
head. Twenty years later, Muehl was arrested and sen -
tenced to seven years in prison. Through the eyes of these
children, the film looks back at the commune and ex -
amines what became of the children of this utopia.
