Germany, the 16th century. Michael Kohlhaas, a respected horse trader, leads a content and happy life with his beloved family. Yet one day, he is stopped at the gate to the market and asked for a permit. Not having one, he leaves two of his horses with the baron as a pledge. When he comes back to reclaim them, his animals are returned to him in a desolate state. Kohlhaas goes to court in order to get a reimbursement, but his case is dismissed. When his wife desperately attempts to ask the princess for justice, she is fatally wounded. Michael Kohlhaas swears to avenge her death, and along with his followers, he starts a bloody revenge campaign against those who wronged him.
