Something Necessary
Something Necessary
Kenya 2007/2008: Widespread violence erupts after the disputed presidential elections. Anne is a Kikuyu woman living in Kalenjin land, married to a Kalenjin. One fateful night, a gang, incited by politicians, vandalizes their farm, kills her husband and puts her son Kitur in a coma. When Anne wakes up in the hospital, the life she led no longer exists: she has gone from being a nurse, wife and mother to an unemployed widow with a hospitalized son struggling to rebuild her farm.
Joseph, a young man, also tries to come to grips with the postelection violence. Heavily weighed down by his participation in the events, he desperately seeks to move forward, but his gang won’t let him. When his job takes Joseph to Anne’s farm he recognizes her and anonymously commits an act of kindness to support the reconstruction of her farm.
Both he and Anne need something that only the other can give to allow them to shed the painful memories of their past and move on.
