Paula turns down a job promising a good career because she wants to marry her boyfriend Michael. He can give Paula what she is looking for: "trust and security". Everything is going along nicely if it wasn′t for Paula′s thing about stealing fountain pens.

Visiting Michael′s antiques shop, she pockets a pen provocatively and in the knowledge that she is being watched. The anonymity of the big city gives her the certainty of being seen but not recognised. But this time things are different. Fabian, the person who has been robbed, comes into Paula′s life - Michael introduces him as an old schoolfriend who recognises Paula as the woman with his pen. He takes her to task but does not betray her secret - her quirk fascinates him. He can′t stop think-ing about her. Paula also feels herself attracted to him, but sees that Fabian is threatening her plan with Michael. She resists the temptation, but suddenly gets caught up in a whirl - she goes stealing with Fabian in the department store, she is out all night with him. Paula wants to distance herself from Fabian, but constantly breaks her resolve. Michael and Fabian are wooing the same woman. But Paula takes a completely different path.
