Summary
Through Roses
Through Roses is a film about the tyranny of memory - the memories of a Jewish violinist who survived Auschwitz. Maximilian Schell plays Carl Stern who had played the violin and had to watch through the rose hedge of the camp commander′s garden how his fellow inmates were herded into the gas chambers.
Now, in a ritual of madness, Stern is overwhelmed by his memories and fantasies. Through Roses tells the story of a man who was forced by history to emigrate from his own - German - culture, who spends his final days in an old people′s home somewhere in America - as a prisoner of his own memories. Through Roses, based on the play of the same name by the author and composer Marc Neikrug, also shows the magnificent musical performance by the violin virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman, himself the son of a musician who survived Auschwitz.
