Biography
Gernot Wieland, born 1968 in Horn, Austria, lives and works in Berlin. He studied at Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna and University of Fine Arts, Berlin. Gernot Wieland's films bring together historical reports with personal recollections and scientific facts, fictional and real elements thereby develop stories between exciting sobriety and tragicomic incidents and develop a sense of the uncanny, mostly in ironic and absurd forms.
Wieland's work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, such as Kindl – Centre of Contemporary Arts, M1 VideoSpace, Berlin (2022, solo); Künstlerhaus Bremen (2022); Ecopoetics of a Generic World, Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles (2022); BIENALSUR, 3rd Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de America del Sur, Buenos Aires (2021); Quartz Studio, Turin (2021, solo); Videonale, Festival for Video and Time-Based Art, Kunstmuseum Bonn (2021); Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen (2020, solo); Salzburger Kunstverein (2020, solo) and Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition, Hong-Gah Museum, Taipei (2020).
His films have been screened at festivals such as Videonale, Festival for Video und Time-Based Art, Kunstmuseum Bonn; IndieLisboa - International Independent Film Festival, Lisbon; V-F-X festival of experimental audiovisual practices, SCCA, Center for Contemporary Arts, Ljubljana; EMAF – European Media Art Festival, Osnabrück; VIII Kinodot Experimental Film Festival, St. Petersburg; Dokfest Kassel; International Short Film Festival Hamburg; Athens Avant-Garde Film Festival; IFFR - International Film Festival Rotterdam; Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival; Gimli Film Festival, Canada.
In 2022 he won the German Short Film Award in the category experimental short film up to 30 min, also in 2022 an award for Best Film at the 24th edition of the Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris (FCDEP); in 2021 a Special Mention at ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival; in 2020 Best Film Award at the VIII Kinodot Experimental Film Festival (St. Petersburg); 2019 the EMAF Media Art Award of the German film critics (Osnabrück) and a Special Mention at the 36th Short Film Festival Hamburg (2019) and the MOSTYN Open 20 Award (UK) in 2017.
