Biography

Tobias Lickes studied Communication, Sociology and Political Science at the University of Münster (2002-2008), during which time he also studied Media Cultures in Sydney (2002-2005). In 2009/10 he completed an editorial internship at Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). After that he worked as a freelance journalist in Hamburg, mainly for NDR. He was a member of the writing team of the satirical magazine "extra 3" for two years before switching to documentary film and reportage. Here he produced numerous contributions for the formats "7 Tage...", "Die Story im Ersten" and "45 Min.", among others on topics such as the work of roadies (2012) and crime scene cleaners (2019) or the endangered beaches on the island of Sylt ("Sandstrand um jeden Preis?", 2021). In the 45-minute movie "7 Tage… Auf der Suche nach Hans" (2018, with Benjamin Arcioli), he went to Belarus to search for traces of his great-uncle, who had been missing since the Second World War. During the Corona pandemic, he shot several reportages about its consequences, including "Kinder und Corona" (2020, together with Lisa Wolff) and " Die Impfung und ich - Zwischen Hoffnung und Bangen" (2021, together with Anja Reumschüssel). Starting in 2022, Lickes made several episodes for the true-crime series "MordOrte" for the public braodcaster WDR.    

In collaboration with Thorsten Ernst, Gordon Volk and Malte Nieschalk, Tobias Lickes made his first  documentary feature in 2022: "All inclusive", about four young athletes from Germany, Finland, Mongolia and Kenya who have a mental disability and are training to participate in the Special Olympics World Games 2023 in Berlin. The film was released theatrically June 2023.

In addition to his work as a journalist, Lickes has been teaching "Journalistic Fundamentals" at the European Media and Business Academy in Hamburg since 2017.
