Biography
Julia Horn, born in Viersen in1961, studied media education, psychology and social sciences in Düsseldorf and Bonn from 1981 to 1990. After completing her studies, she began working as a freelance writer and director for television, primarily for WDR, but also occasionally for other public broadcasters such as Arte, 3sat and ZDF. Her numerous reportages and TV documentaries include "Leben mit dem Sterben" (2002), on the topics of death and mourning, "Die süße Gier der Jacky D." (2005) for the series "Menschen hautnah", as well as the sequels "Das Ende der süßen Gier" and "Jacky und die süße Gier" (2008). Her "37°" report "Mama ist anders" (2008), about the everyday life of disabled mothers and their children, won the Silver Award at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards.
In "Buon Giorno Deutschland" (2010) Horn portrayed a Sicilian who emigrated to Germany as a guest worker while his family stayed in Sicily. The feature-length TV documentary "In mir keine Welt" (2012) focused on a severely depressed man whose doctors think the implantation of a brain pacemaker is the only way forward for him. Other documentaries by Horn include "Tsunami: Überlebt, aber nicht überwunden" (2014) and "Zu mir? Zu Dir? Zu uns!" (2015), in which she accompanied four couples as they moved into their first shared home. "Lesbos: Helfer der Gestrandeten" (2015), about the refugee situation on the Greek island of Lesbos, was awarded the German Camera Prize.
In April 2019, Horn's documentary film "Bruderliebe" ("Dear Brother") premiered at the 'Hot Docs' Festival in Toronto (Canada). In the long-term observation, which was made over a period of ten years, she describes the efforts of a man for his brother lying in a coma, whom all others had already given up. After screenings at a number of festivals, among others at the DOK.fest Munich, "Bruderliebe" was released in German cinemas in November 2019.
