Biography

Knut Elstermann was born August 4, 1960, in East Berlin. In 1982, he started to study journalism in Leipzig and graduated four years later. Until 1989, Elstermann was a member of the editorial staff of the GDR daily newspaper "Neues Deutschland" and at the same time worked for the movie magazine "Filmspiegel". From 1989 to 1991, he worked as a host for the youth radio station "DT64".

Since 1992, Knut Elstermann works as a film critic for ORB (since 2003: RBB) and since 1997, Elstermann hosts his own movie show on Saturdays for the radio station Radio Eins called "12 Uhr Mittags – Das Filmmagazin". Besides, Elstermann also works for RBB television and for the TV channel Arte and writes film reviews for Berliner Zeitung, among others. From 2005 to 2006, Elstermann hosted the movie show "Cinematalk" together with director Detlev Buck for the TV news channel N24.

In 2008, his autobiographical book "Gerdas Schweigen" was adapted as a documentary film for the big screen by director Britta Wauer.
