Biography

Born 1871; died 1943. He was the son of a painter from Düsseldorf. He considered himself a writer in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde and allegedly coined the German slang term "Kintopp" meaning "the pictures".

He began writing fantasy scripts in 1913 and both "Der Student von Prag" and "Alraune" were filmed several times. Ewers lived in the US from 1914-1920. Back in Germany, he became a member of the Nazi party in 1931, and it was for them that he wrote the screenplay for Hans Westmar (1933).
