Summary

After a theft at the freight station, train dispatcher Brock lets one of the perpetrators get away: It is Runge, who denounced Brock's wife - who was hiding a Jewish fugitive - to the Gestapo during World War II. Out of shame for not standing up against injustice and fighting for his wife at the time, Brock changed his identity. That is why his daughter Vera does not know anything about the true fate of her deceased mother. Runge puts the young locksmith Frank onto Vera, but he falls in love with the girl and discovers the true circumstances together with her. When Frank is then murdered by Runge, Brock finally breaks his silence about the past.
